Introduction:

UNFPA HIV/AIDS Branch in collaboration with Asia and the Pacific Division, UNFPA Headquarters, New York and UNFPA CST for SAWA Kathmandu, Nepal is organizing a regional HIV/AIDS workshop for UNFPA Country Offices in South and West Asia to strengthen organizational response to HIV/AIDS prevention and programming.

Purpose:

  • To develop a sub-regional strategic framework for UNFPA support to HIV prevention in SAWA with country specific follow-up action plans based on the status of the epidemic in each of the countries.
  • To strengthen UNFPA’s institutional capacity to programme for HIV prevention and for linkages between HIV and RH.

Objectives:

  • To develop a clearer and common understanding of all the elements of the Fund’s Strategic Guidance on HIV Prevention for country level programming.
  • To update participants on the status and policy/advocacy issues of the epidemic in the sub-region
  • To provide a technical update in the three UNFPA focus areas of young people, pregnant women and condom programming for HIV prevention to facilitate programming.
  • To share experiences, lessons learnt based on examples from SAWA countries as well as from South East Asia also.
  • To articulate a SAWA sub-regional strategic framework for HIV/AIDS prevention and country specific follow-up steps. 
  • To identify/define one initial priority theme for action for technical support, knowledge sharing, networking and partnership building as well as the roles and responsibilities of countries, UNFPA CST, headquarters- TSD and APD.
