Professional Experience:
- Ms. Neera Shrestha joined UNFPA Country Support Team in Kathmandu as a Research
Assistant in September 1995. Since July 1997, she is functioning as the Acting Management
Officer with the CST. At CST, she is assisting the Director in drafting of six-monthly
progress reports, contribution to annual report of the Executive Director and other
periodical reports of the CST; developing, updating and monitoring of the Team's workplan;
analyzing mission reports and carrying out follow-up actions as necessary; supervising
computerization of CST mission reports in retrievable form; and in collaboration with the
CST Advisers, assisting in establishing and maintaining data bases, analyzing data and
producing reports and newsletters; and supervising the works of Documentation Assistant in
ensuring a fully functioning documentation centre. As a Research Assistant, she reviewed
the commonalities in the Programme of Actions of the recent UN Conferences on Population
and Development (Cairo, 1994), Social Development (Copenhagen, 1995) and Women (Beijing,
1995); reviewed the reports and literatures on RH research in South Asia region; prepared
summary project profiles of UNFPA supported project documents; and assisted in the
preparation of training materials of Gender training and RH Management workshop.
- Prior to joining UNFPA CST/CASA, Ms. Shrestha was a Senior Research Associate with
Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS), a leading non-profit making NGO based
at Kathmandu and involved in multi-disciplinary research activities and action programmes
oriented towards self-reliance development of rural poor in general and women in
particular. Her major job responsibilities included preparation and conceptualization of
project proposals; designing of research instruments; training, management and supervision
of field activities, data analysis and report writing. During her 14 years of affiliation
with IIDS, starting from February 1982 -August 1995, Ms. Shrestha was involved in several
socio-economic, population, health and family planning related research projects in
various capacities. Some of them are as follows:
- As a Principal Investigator undertook an evaluation study of JOICFP sponsored and FPAN
implemented project on " Sustainable Community-based FP/MCH Project with special
focus on Women" in Panchkhal, Kavre Palanchok, Sunsari and Morang Districts in Nepal
in 1995.
- As an Associate Investigator in a WHO funded project entitled "Determinants of
Abortion and Subsequent Reproductive Behaviour Among Women in three Urban District of
Nepal", Jan.1992 - Aug.1994, she was responsible for designing and pre-testing of
research instruments; recruitment and training of field interviewers; management and
supervision of field activities; conducting case studies; analyzing data and writing
report.
- Worked as an Associate Investigator in a JOICFP sponsored Baseline Knowledge, attitude
and Practice Survey on Sustainable Community-based Project with special focus on Women in
Sunsari District, Nepal in 1993; and in a WHO funded project on "Determinants of
Abortion and Subsequent Reproductive Behaviour among Women in Three Urban Districts in
Nepal", 1992-94.
- Worked as a Core Team Member in the University Research Corporation (URC) sponsored
Operation Research Studies on (i) "Developing Strategies to Increase the Use of IUDs
in Urban Areas of Nepal", and (ii) "Improving Family Planning Acceptances
Through Panchayat Based Clinics and Outreach Services Through Women Volunteers in
Nepal", 1988-92; CRS Company of Nepal sponsored study on "Impact of CRS
Advertising Tracking Survey: A Baseline Wave",1987; and IDRC, Canada sponsored study
on "Prospective Study on Rural Abortion in Nepal", 1985.
- Was a Project Coordinator in PIACT, USA sponsored study on One-Year Hospital based
Prospective study on Abortion in Nepal" in 1984 and involved in design and
preparation of research instruments, analysis of one-year prospective hospitals records
and interviews with abortion-complication related cases in four main hospitals of
Kathmandu Valley, conducting case studies of patients with induced abortion related
complications and report writing.
- As a Team Member, involved in the collection and analysis of secondary data, preparation
of research instruments, supervising field activities pertaining to several
socio-economic, women and development related projects for HMG, Nepal, and other bilateral
and multilateral agencies, such as UNCTAD/GATT, Geneva; USAID Nepal; UNDP, UNFPA, Nepal;
IFRP/ USA; SATA/Nepal etc., 1982-83.
